You can walk int the lobby of the Chrysler Building (42d and Lex) but no farther. From there you can see the murals, the ceiling, the floor, the elevators. Across the street is Grand Central Terminal, which has free access. You will get more out of that if you take a guided walking tour where they reveal a lot of the history and peculiarities of the place. You can go into and up to the 86th floor observatory in the Empire State Building. The Lobby has artwork from the thirties. Art deco style, like the Chrysler. Radio City Music Hall is another Deco Masterpiece and usually has something going on there. There are several world class museums in NYC, Including the Metropolitan, Natural History, Modern Art (aka MoMA), NY Historical Society, Folk Art, Whitney Museum of American Art and such niche places as the Museum of the City of New York, the Fire Department, Skyscraper or Money. Even if it's a little nippy out, you won't feel it because you'll be skating (exercising). Check out the Rockefeller Center X-mas tree and X-mas show while you're there. You can visit the Empire State Building Observation deck (the one that's not completely outdoors). You can take the Staten Island Ferry from Lower Manhattan.
