You most definitely should visit the Kogod Courtyard of the SI American Art Museum/Portrait Gallery, designed by London-based firm, Foster + Partners. It was recently tapped by Conde Nast magazine as one of the modern world's architectural wonders.

The D.C. Metro system was designed by Harry M. Weese and the Dulles International Airport terminal was designed by Eero Saarinen.

Plan to stop by the National Building Museum, one of the District's hidden gems -- they have a great bookstore on architects and design styles.

Despite L'Enfant's thumbprint and french and greek influence, Washington DC does have some interesting modern architecture throughout the city. My favorite is I.M. Pei's East Wing of the National Gallery. The Hirshorn Museum is also a winner. Of course the Kennedy Center is designed by noted architect Edward D. Stone.

Frank Lloyd Wright influences are nearby too with the Pope Leighey Home near Mt. Vernon area of Alexandria. I attach a link that identifies other notable properties in the DC area.

The Holocaust Museum came to mind right away as it is from the exterior very unique with right angles and severe in the architecture. The The Architect was James Ingo Freed.
The Canadian Embassy on Pennsylvania Avenue near the Capital Building is a modern design which blends in with the surrounding architecture. Right beside can be found the Neuseum a museum dedicated to the news of the world and is very modern in design.
the Bascilica Shine of the Immaculate Conception was built in the first half of the 20 th century and is the largest RC Church in the USA and of Byzantium design with incredible mosaics. The National Cathedral is of Gothic Design and also built in the 20 th Century. The area around L'Enfant Plaza has one modern building and is unique. The Washinton Plaza hotel off Thomas Circle has the Washinton Plaza which appears to be a design of the 70's. To find modern designs, you have to walk the different streets. Washington was designed by Pierre L'enfant and much of the architecure has a distnctive European infuluence. The Gaylord Hotel is a Vegas style structure that is unique among Washington hotels. The Metro system is modern based uon the ceiling of Union Station. The motiff of the ceiling is carried down into the supporting structure of the subway tunnels.
Take a tour and keep your notebook handy to investigate buildings later!

Visit the holocaust museum. The inside is made to replicate the Warsaw ghetto. I was very impressed. It's an amazing building. You will also be impressed with the marble walls with inscriptions and the hall of remembrance. I think it is a great architectural piece of work.
