I got confused, are they talking about the post-and-lintel construction, arches, vaults, domes, post-and-beam, trusses, balloon framing -or-
cast-iron, steel-cage and concrete architecture?
There are many different materials you can use for a structural system. But generally speaking, there are four concepts of lateral force resisting systems in building design.
Shear Wall- vertical diaphragm
Moment Resisting Frame- members and joints are capable of resisting forces primarily by flexure.
Braced Frame- vertical truss system
Dual System- Combination of special or intermediate moment resisting frames and shear walls or braced frames.
