Actually, the AIA is not the official American Architecture Institute. The AIA is simply a professional organization for Architects - much like a club. Other organizations, such as NOMA, the APA, AIBD, SARA and NCARB (among others) also offer similar services to Architects in the US.
In fact, NCARB probably serves a more important role than the AIA in some respects… it is responsible for testing candidates for Architectural Licensure. The AIA plays no part in Licensing Architects, although it does offer Continuing Education Credits.
Spain’s primary Architecture association is Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos.
