BADGER4LIFE asked: So I’m thinking about changing my major to architecture. I am majoring in Radiologic Technology currently and am finding that it isn’t for me. What are the specifics behind being an architect and what are some of the requirements to do so? I am at UW Madison currently, but am willing to transfer. Thanks!

One Response on What exactly do architects do? What’s the best architecture college in the midwest?
They have a decent architectural program in Wisconsin. Personally, I received my MArch from Illinois Institute of Technology just a couple of hours away from you. If you ever visit The Prairie Bookstore in Chicago, you’ll see the names of the faculty as either authors or subjects of architectural books. While attending IIT, none of the professors there were theoretical architects, they either owned the firm or was a high ranking member in one. Most won achievement awards and understand real world conditions.
As far as what architects do, the answer that I give is “all of the above”. There really isn’t anything that we don’t do. It all depends on the market segment that you pursue. But I can tell you that many interns believe they will start designing projects when they get out of school. That is simply not true, unless you are one of the few that manage to win national awards. Most of us have to work our way up to be a designer. But it is necessary, since this is also the time that we learn codes and building systems.
